Grass is Greener

You know the saying.  "The grass is always greener on the other side."

And you know how it isn't always?  Try teaching that to a horse.  Trust me, I've seen enough horses with their heads sticking through the fence munching on the grass that's on the other side.  And they're standing in equally lush and green grass.

So, what am I talking about here?  Horses?  Grass?  What craziness is this on my writing blog?

For the last couple of years it has seemed at times that the only writers who are blogging are YA or romance writers.  As a non-YA, non-romance (cough) writer it's been rather alienating at times.  As I've seen contest after contest for YA pitches or bloggers who enter the writing contests hosted by RWA and its subsidiaries.  They win accolades, they get their work in front of people who have the power to influence their career, and the grass looks so stinkin' green over there.

I've crossed that fence, tasting that grass that's over there.

And some patches of it are really tasty.  But I still feel like that horse trying to reach the grass on the other side of the fence ignoring the green and lush grass I'm standing on.

  1. I know that greener grass feeling myself, especially lately. And I also agree that we can't spend out writing lives with our heads stuck through the fence. But dang those YA books do get the BEST covers. :)

  2. I agree that YA gets a lot more attention. But I have noticed a few middle grade reviews and Shannon Messenger and some other bloggers (me when I have middle grade author interviews) are trying to spotlight middle grade authors more.
