WiP Wednesday 7/21

I've begun reading through my draft of Lodestar in the last few days.  As I go, I'm leaving comments for myself.  Questions, suggestions, etc.  Already I'm catching things that need to be developed more, threaded through the later parts of the narrative.

I've also begun marking two different things in the manuscript.  Adverbs go in red and internal monologue goes in green.  I think redundancies had a color at some point but that ended.

As for my other project, the one that I'm outlining.  Well, that's not going so well.  Every time I sit down to outline, I feel like a 2-year-old mid-tantrum.  I don't want to outline, but it's necessary for me to figure out if this project is viable in the least.  I need to finish this outline in the next few days, but I don't think that it's going to happen.

How are your WiPs going?

  1. Outlining is the HARDEST part for me, seriously. It's where I have to be the most creative and figure out those bare bones that essentially make up the best parts of the story - what will truly make it great. Everything else is icing, in a way. Some of it more important icing, but not the bare bones for sure. At least that's how my outlining is. :)

    Good luck!

  2. I just had some inspiration on an oooooooold old story rattling around my head and have been working on outlining that. I actually like outlining a lot more than I thought I would. It allows me to think through the whole story and make notes of where to weave in foreshadowing and necessary storytelling pieces without involving a TON of revision.

  3. Color coding is fantastic!

*outlining cookies* I've tried to outline, I really have. But it never works out for me. I've even tried a different sort of outlining that's as close to writing as you can get and still be outlining, and...nothing. My characters all go on strike. >.<

WIPs are going good and revisions are almost done.
    *tosses confetti* ;-)

  4. I'm outlining something completely new, and crossing my fingers that I can churn out several thousand words tomorrow to see if the idea will actually work. Ah, trial and error...

I don't really like outlining either, but it seems to be a necessary evil. Sigh.

  5. When I start with a new project, I write the scene I know I'm going to love the most. Maybe it was the catalyst for the whole idea, maybe it's the introduction, maybe it's the conclusion. What it does it help to put me in that story, in that place, then I begin to outline, knowing that my outline will probably go by the wayside about halfway through.
Good Luck with your new project.

  6. Don't be too hard on yourself. I rarely outline. If I know my beginning and ending I start writing and the middle fills in. Just enjoy the journey. Yeah, I know you've heard that before, but the temptation was too much. :)
