WiP Wednesday 7/14

I'm a writer.  Through and through.

I didn't even last a day without formulating some new writing project to be working on.  Instead of tinkering with adding some new words to the short stories I've got sitting in my hard drive, I began plotting on a super secret project.

That's right.  It's top secret.  This one requires Level Infinity Security Clearance.  And the Universe doesn't hand that out lightly.

But in all honesty, I don't want to talk too much about this one because if I can't make it work, I'll be utterly devastated.

In other news, I FINISHED LODESTAR!  I wrote almost 2800 words last Thursday to finish the book. I was giddy when I typed "The End."  Beyond giddy.

Yay!

It's currently sitting on my computer, simmering away.  I've already started a revision checklist for my first round of edits.  I'll go through those, fix typos and such, then it's off to my very first beta reader.  Who is, in fact, my brother.  I asked him to read it because he's a guy.  And he likes books.  And he can tell me from a reader's perspective if the book is working.  He can also tell me if my main character (who is male) sounds male enough.

Of course, this also means I'll need some writerly-peeps as beta readers.

How did y'all find your betas?  And, how are your WiPs going?

  1. WOO!! Congrats on finishing and starting a super secret new project! :D

I have a couple alpha readers who tell me if it's good or not, they don't give me any real feedback, just lots of enthusiasm lol. And then a friend and fellow English major is a beta for me and I've recently swapped MSs with a wonderful friend I met through blogs actually.

So I don't have many beta readers or a crit partner or anything, but you can always do a call on your blog or go to places like Absolute Write. Good luck!

  2. Good question about betas, I actually need to start finding some betas really soon! I've had a friend look at it, and she's given me great advice, but I need some writers to get down and dirty. Let me know if you need any feedback :).

  3. I found my betas through yalitchat. So ace. I'd be happy to critique if needed, tough (I love reading new manuscripts)

  4. *throws confetti* Congrats on finishing! Awesome accomplishment!

As for betas, I have my crit group (which I found through a contest) and then I put out an open call on my blog. It's worked well so far. I think most important is to find people are familiar with your genre and to get a different variety of readers (writers who can look for technique, readers who can focus on bigger picture things, etc.)

  5. Woohoo dahling!! That's excellent news!

For betas, I tend to ask my close writer/twitter buddies. For the most part, I'm already beta'ing their stories, so its a natural flip for them to read mine.

  7. Congrats on finishing!

I found my betas by asking on my blog. Then I got way too many, and not all of them were super helpful because they didn't really read my genre to begin with. There were way too many cooks, so to speak. Now I only have a few, but it has taken me awhile to figure who works best for my work. Good luck! I'd offer, but I have to much on my plate. :(

  8. Congrats on finishing!!!

I haven't found betas yet, to be honest... I was going to, then went back to the editing drawing board. Oops!

Sounds like you're having fun plotting the new project :)
