It bugs me as a mom of teens. I was so infuriated at the adults in The Hunger Games, that I couldn't even continue the book. Stopped reading.Angiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01445455787485222068noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2287168903003077619.post-39513136674349039552011-05-26T09:25:10.760-06:002011-05-26T09:25:10.760-06:00I don't know - I mean, I agree in theory, I de...I don't know - I mean, I agree in theory, I definitely do, but I may not have when I was fifteen. 'Parents? Ugh, I have to deal with them in real life, why would I want them in my fiction?' <br />So no, oblivious parents are bad. But kids live largely in their own world, and forcing a parent into it can be a huge immersion-killer. So it's a careful line. :)Bethany Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12829932931010851406noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2287168903003077619.post-20949489202006718752011-05-26T09:25:05.111-06:002011-05-26T09:25:05.111-06:00I think it's "easy" to let the paren...I think it's "easy" to let the parents is YA be either non-existent or oblivious. You can still have a theme of misunderstanding or strained relationships without making the parents completely unbelievable.Kayeleen Hamblinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07652280450104899423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2287168903003077619.post-18895582506291656772011-05-26T07:47:29.882-06:002011-05-26T07:47:29.882-06:00Bella's Dad drove me crazy! So much so that I wrote about it here: http://middlepassages-lcs.blogspot.com/2009/05/dawn-breaks.html How could he be a police chief and be so oblivious? I agree that parents should be developed as more realistic characters to therefore enhance the story...unlike Bella's Dad who simply "allows" the story.
